The 2017 Tony Award’s did not disappoint! I loved Kevin Spacey as the host- his impressions were fairly accurate (even though I was confused as to why Johnny Carson was relevant to Broadway), and his voice was decent!
Can we all agree that Nick Kroll and John Mulaney (Oh Hello! On Broadway) were hilarious as presenters? They were one of the evening’s highlights for me. Bette Middler looked AMAZING; why didn’t she perform again?! Poor David Hyde Pierce- while he was singing the most average song in the world, everyone was wondering where Bette was hiding.
There was also very little about politics mentioned at the show (which most people appreciated) aside from Cynthia Nixon’s acceptance speech for her ‘Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play’ award, and Spacey’s Bill Clinton impression. Dr. Jill Biden presented the cast of ‘Bandstand’ before their performance, and she received a standing ovation from the audience.
I was excited to see that ‘Jitney’ won for Best Revival of a Play- I thought it was a fantastic and unassuming show- a stellar ensemble cast. I might be one of the few people who didn’t LOVE (I just ‘liked’) ‘Dear Evan Hansen’, but fully support the many awards the show took home. For a full list of winners, see below:
